Ämmässuo's first composting plant was opened for trial use in 1998. The composting facility has gradually expanded. The post-composting hall was completed in 2004, the new composting plant in 2007, and the CPH biogas plant in 2015.
Our office was involved in the CHP plant project as the main designer. Architectural design was handled by Virkkunen & Co.
The customer was HSY Helsinki Region Environmental Services Municipal Corporation.
The power plant is the so-called CHP or Combined Heat and Power plant where engines produce both electricity and heat. The power plant itself includes the power plant building and the transformer building. The surface materials of the building are profile sheet, concrete and painted steel.
The efficiency of CHP is optimal, as almost the entire energy content of the fuels can be used in production.
Joint production also reduces CO2 emissions and costs.
